50 Tiny Parks Take Over Downtown Dallas

2014 PARK(ing) Day PosterDALLAS, Texas – September 9, 2015 – In partnership with Downtown Dallas Inc., an annual event will transform parking spaces into miniature parks or parklets for public use in over 160 cities across the globe, including Dallas. On Friday, September 18, 2015 artists, designers, activists, businesses and residents will temporarily transform metered parking spaces into public parks and other social spaces as part of a global movement called “PARK(ing) Day.” The event is intended to promote social interaction, civic engagement, critical thinking and creativity through individual generosity and play.

This year marks Dallas’ fifth year participating in PARK(ing) Day. On that day, city-dwellers will transform permitted on-street parking spaces into dozens of tiny parks stretching several blocks along Main Street (between Field Street and South Harwood Street) in Downtown Dallas. “PARK(ing) Day gives people a chance to see our city in new ways,” said Jessica Martinez, PARK(ing) Day Dallas co-organizer. “More importantly, it sends a message to developers and city planners we want a more walkable and vibrant city.”

Visitors are encouraged to learn, play and interact within these pint-sized parks from 11:00am to 6:00pm. The event aims to attract downtown residents, office workers and visitors and expose them to a host of activities including day-long musical and dance performances, games, areas for people to gather, relax, work and socialize for the day. Passersby can experience a wide range of themed parks including a tiny Aztec jungle, little library, photo booth, yoga studio, mini boardwalk, art gallery and more.
